Birmingham Balloons and the Environment

The importance of the environment and climate change is foremost in many of our minds now, and we, as both balloon decorators, and as individuals who care about the planet, are aware of this.  Balloons can still be a safe and fun way to decorate events, and balance is required to develop policies that are environmentally responsible and are commensurate with the actual level of impact.

As a business we are members of PEBA (Pro Environment Balloon Alliance) which is driving environmentally responsible change and is committed to reducing balloon litter and any potential effects on wildlife by eliminating the deliberate release of balloons.  Birmingham Balloons has always refused to sell balloons that knowingly would be used for balloon releases and promotes the responsible use and disposal of balloons which is vital for effective environmentally responsible change.

The vast majority of our work uses latex balloons.  These are not plastic but are a plant-based product that is biodegradable.   Latex is harvested by being tapped from rubber tree plants, that does not harm them, and once a tree has stopped producing latex it is harvested and the wood used for timber, and a new tree planted in its place.  Leading manufacturers source their latex from sustainable Rainforest Alliance Certified and Forest Stewardship Council Plantations. This contributes to building healthy forests, provides employment to some of the most impoverished people in the world, builds thriving communities, and the billions of trees fight climate change and global warming by reducing CO2.

As part of our work we use balloon gas, which most people refer to as helium.   Medical Helium is not used to inflate balloons, the helium used to inflate balloons is not pure enough for medical or scientific use. It is a by-product gathered during the production of medical grade helium.   Instead of simply wasting this resource, it is collected and recycled and used by balloon decorators and weather balloons for example.  The sale of balloon gas also offsets the cost of medical helium.

If you have any questions or concerns about using balloons, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to chat to you about them
